Riteish Deshmukh Joins Ram Pothineni’s Neo-Noir RAPO23
Riteish Deshmukh is set for his first Telugu film role in Ram Pothineni's neo-noir action thriller RAPO23, a casting built on a long family friendship.

Riteish Deshmukh is heading into new territory. The Hindi film regular has been announced for Ram Pothineni’s next, tentatively titled RAPO23, marking his first Telugu film.
While the makers have not revealed the exact part, they welcomed him with a short note, calling him an “ever-versatile performer and a powerhouse of talent.” The film is being described as a neo-noir action thriller, a space built on morally complex characters and layered conflicts.
A casting built on an old friendship
RAPO23 also comes with a warm off-screen backstory. Ram Pothineni has been close to Riteish’s wife, actor Genelia D’Souza, since they co-starred in the 2008 blockbuster Ready. The two have publicly celebrated that friendship for years, often marking the film’s anniversary on social media.
That bond extends to the families. Ram has interacted with Riteish and their children, and the households routinely exchange birthday and festival wishes. Ram has called Genelia the “most selfless and caring friend anyone could ask for,” while she has described him as one of her “absolute favourites.”
That personal history is part of why the casting feels less like a transactional crossover and more like an extended circle finally working together.
A wider Bollywood-to-Telugu wave
Riteish is the latest in a growing line of Hindi film actors taking on Telugu roles. Sanjay Dutt has appeared in Double iSmart and The Raja Saab, Saif Ali Khan in Devara, Bobby Deol in Hari Hara Veera Mallu, Emraan Hashmi in They Call Him OG, Ajay Devgn in RRR, Akshay Kumar in Kannappa, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Saindhav. Younger actors are moving too:
- Divyenndu Sharma has boarded Ram Charan’s sports action drama Peddi.
- Raghav Juyal is part of Nani’s upcoming film The Paradise.
Why this matters for fans
For Indian entertainment audiences, cross-industry casting has become a signal that projects are aiming for a wider opening weekend. A familiar Bollywood face in a Telugu action film can pull media attention, social chatter and a section of the Hindi audience that might otherwise wait for the dubbed version.
There is a creative upside as well. Riteish gets to step outside the comic timing he is known for, and Ram gets a co-star whose acting range spans broad comedy and darker turns. If the two share substantial screen time, that contrast could become one of the film’s talking points.
The announcement does not include a release date yet. What is clear is that RAPO23 is being positioned as a big-ticket action film, and the casting is already pulling attention from both industries.
