Shefali Shah on why she almost skipped her memoir debut
Shefali Shah reveals why her debut book almost became fiction, how humour shaped The Audacity of Being, and why she left the meaning to readers.

Shefali Shah has spent years making other people’s stories feel real on screen. With The Audacity of Being: A Sort-of Memoir, published on October 1, 2026, the actor turns the camera back on herself—though she almost did not do it this way.
A memoir she had to be talked into
Shah had already been writing for some time: a blog, regular social media reflections, her own observations. But when the idea of a book came up, she did not automatically reach for her own life story.
“I wanted to start with fiction,” she told Bollywood Hungama. Her publisher had a different view. A first book, the team argued, had to be a novel—and they wanted that first book to be a memoir. “So I was not very convinced with it,” she said.
The pushback eventually made sense to her. The publisher had more experience in the business, and Shah found something valuable in the deal: full ownership of the telling.
“I have copyright over my own story,” she said.
What shaped the book
- She had been blogging and writing on social media long before the book offer.
- She originally imagined making her debut with fiction.
- Her publisher wanted the first book to be a memoir, not the fiction she had imagined.
- Discussions with the publisher later brought her acting work into the manuscript.
Humour over a moral of the story
Shah did not want The Audacity of Being to become a serious account that handed readers a fixed lesson. “I didn’t want it to be a moral of the story. And very important, I wanted it to be a fun read,” she said.
That tone is central to the book’s promise: the stories move easily, with humour doing the work rather than a set of broadcast conclusions.
The actor inside the memoir
The manuscript did not begin with a rigid plan. It started as a personal memoir, then expanded after conversations with her publisher. The characters she has played, and the reasons she chose them, became chapters of their own.
“Originally, when it started, it was becoming a personal memoir. But then we also realised that the parts I play are a huge part of me as a person and why I chose them and what went into creating them,” she said.
That makes the book something closer to a working actor’s diary than a standard celebrity memoir. Shah has also written some fiction, though she is unsure what will happen to that work. As for the takeaway, she is not prescribing one. “I don’t know what people are going to take out of it,” she said.
For fans who know Shah through her performances, that open-endedness is the draw: a chance to spend time with the person behind the characters, without being told exactly what to think.
