Squid Game Star Hoyeon Filmed Hope Action Sequence 18 Times

Squid Game's Hoyeon trained in firearms and car drifting for Hope, then shot one long action sequence 18 times. The film hits India on October 23.

Hoyeon Filmed Hope's Firearm Action Sequence 18 Times

Before Hope reaches Indian theatres, Squid Game’s Hoyeon is already giving audiences a reason to pay attention: one long firearm action sequence in the film had to be shot 18 times.

From Squid Game to rookie officer Sung-ae

Hoyeon, who became a global breakout through Squid Game, moves into unfamiliar terrain in director Na Hong-jin’s sci-fi action thriller. She plays Sung-ae, a rookie police officer pulled into an increasingly dangerous situation.

Her preparation was physical and technical. She trained in firearms, car drifting and several action techniques she had never attempted before, a process she calls the most exciting part of the role.

“I had to put in a lot of work learning firearms, car drifting and all these different action techniques, but honestly, that was the most exciting part for me. I was getting to do things I had never experienced before,” she told Filmfare.

Why the 18-take scene matters

The longest test came in a single firearm action sequence. Hoyeon says director Na Hong-jin is a perfectionist, so the team kept refining every detail until it landed.

“There’s this long firearm action sequence that we shot 18 times, so by the end of it, it was definitely intense,” she recalled.

Repeating the scene meant holding physicality and concentration across take after take. For a performer known more for dramatic intensity than gunplay, that discipline is the clearest sign of how different Hope will feel.

Hope arrives in Indian theatres on October 23

Written and directed by Na Hong-jin, Hope stars Hoyeon alongside Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Hwang Jung-min. Hong Kyung-pyo, the cinematographer behind Parasite, films the action.

  • Release date: October 23 across India
  • Languages: English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu
  • Cast: Hoyeon, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Hwang Jung-min

Star Entertainment is bringing the film to Indian screens, another sign of how seriously Korean tentpoles are now courting local audiences through dubbed and subtitled versions.

If you want to see Hoyeon in full-action mode, mark October 23 and choose the language that suits you best.
