Raja Saab’s Rs 300-crore Sankranthi bet fails; Prabhas 2028 film
TG Vishwa Prasad says the Prabhas-led horror-fantasy would have fared better outside Sankranthi and teases a fourth film with the star in 2028.

Timing, not the film, took the blame in the first public post-mortem of The Raja Saab. Producer TG Vishwa Prasad told media on Tuesday that the Prabhas-led horror-fantasy would have had a very different run outside the Sankranthi corridor, and that the crowded holiday window may have cost the film its shot at a cleaner box office.
A big-budget bet collided with a festival pile-up
Mounted on a reported budget of over Rs 300 crore, The Raja Saab was always meant to be an event. Directed by Maruthi Dasari, the film pairs Prabhas with Sanjay Dutt as the antagonist and also features Malavika Mohanan and Nidhhi Agerwal.
After multiple postponements through 2025, it finally landed during Sankranthi, a window that is both a blessing and a trap. The same holiday that swells cinema footfall also multiplies competition. This year that meant Chiranjeevi’s Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu and two other releases were all fighting for the same screens and the same opening-weekend audience.
By his own account, the producer believes the film “would have been different” with a less crowded date. It is a convenient counterfactual, but not an empty one: split screens and divided attention are real variables in how a Rs 300-crore film recovers its investment.
Signs of trouble before the first show
The date was not the only worry. Sections of the trade had already flagged muted buzz — some fans had been lukewarm about the promotional material, and the songs had not built the kind of pre-release heat a film of this scale usually needs. That made the festival clash hurt more.
The Prabhas partnership is still moving
Vishwa Prasad is not stepping back from the star. He said a new large-scale collaboration with Prabhas “will be firmed up in 2028”, which would be their fourth project together. People Media Factory’s association with Prabhas already includes distribution of Adipurush, and the studio is set to release Spirit in Telugu.
Prabhas’s own calendar remains full:
- Fauzi and Spirit — both reportedly slated for 2027
- Kalki 2 and Salaar 2 — the bigger franchise bets still on the horizon
Why release dates are the new box-office chess
For Indian commercial cinema, festival dating has never been pure upside. A huge holiday can lift everybody, but only if the field is built to share it. The Raja Saab post-mortem is a reminder that a festival release only works as strategy when a film can actually hold screens and conversation. Otherwise it is just expensive traffic.
The immediate question for fans is whether the promised 2028 film locks in — and whether the next Prabhas outings choose their dates with more breathing room.
