Mumbai Police File FIR Against Imran Khan After 400+ Detentions
Mumbai Police filed an FIR against Imran Khan, Lekha Washington and others after mass detentions at August Kranti Maidan. Here's what we know.

Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against actor Imran Khan, his girlfriend Lekha Washington and several others after a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday, October 10. The case was filed at Gamdevi police station, hours after a large gathering was held in solidarity with a Delhi protest by the Cockroach Janta Party demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
From detention to a police complaint
Police had barricaded roads around the maidan and deployed extra personnel ahead of the protest. Even so, the gathering drew a large crowd. Reports say more than 400 people were detained there, and some accounts put the number across Mumbai at around 600. Among those named in the FIR were Imran, Lekha Washington and Imran’s cousin Zayn Marie Khan. They were released later that night.
- FIR registered at Gamdevi police station
- Sections 223, 126(2), 189(2), 189(3) and 189(5) of the BNS cited
- More than 400 detained, with some reports saying about 600 across Mumbai
What the FIR actually says
The complaint invokes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to disobeying an order issued by a public servant, wrongful restraint and offences associated with unlawful assembly. Police personnel filed the complaint after the gathering, which took place amid heightened security in the area.
It is worth remembering that an FIR is a first information report. It puts an allegation on record and starts the legal process; it is not a finding of guilt.
Imran’s response from the van
After his detention, Imran posted a selfie from inside a police van on Instagram with the caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.” Lekha Washington shared updates saying she did not know where they were being taken, and after their release she alleged that the police were not allowing them to return home or arrange a vehicle. She later told followers they were safe and heading home.
Why it matters for Bollywood fans
Imran Khan has kept a quieter public profile in recent years, so the image of him in a police van is a sharp departure from the boy-next-door roles many fans remember. The FIR also places a familiar celebrity name onto a larger political story about electoral rolls, which means the protest is likely to stay in entertainment headlines even for readers who do not follow election disputes closely.
The Mumbai gathering was held in solidarity with the CJP’s Delhi demonstration, where protesters were detained amid a major police operation. The underlying demand is Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls. For now, the case is on record, and the next step in the legal process has not been detailed in the reports.
