Rajinikanth gives Karthik Subbaraj's Dorothy a one-hour review

Karthik Subbaraj’s tenth directorial, Dorothy, has been collecting warm words from the film fraternity for two weeks. Now the one endorsement the filmmaker likely wanted most has arrived: Rajinikanth sat down with him and the lead actors for a full hour to discuss the film.

A milestone wrapped in a fan moment

Subbaraj has always been open about his Rajinikanth fandom, and the two previously worked together on Petta. With Dorothy arriving as his 10th film, the meeting carried extra weight. After the conversation, the filmmaker shared photographs and a note on social media about the interaction.

“Thalaivaaaaa…. Fantastic..Beautiful… Mindblowing’ !!” he wrote. He added that Rajinikanth “spoke in detail for an hour appreciating every aspect of the film.”

In the same post, Subbaraj quoted Rajinikanth as saying, “Intha Karthik Subbaraja thaan thedittu irunthen… Hat’s off.” Those words, he said, made him feel like he was “flying.”

The cast shares their own memories

Sananth, one of Dorothy‘s central actors, also posted about the meeting. He recalled Rajinikanth saying “Award confirm!” and praising the demanding nature of Sananth’s role, along with the transformation from his earlier appearance as Anwar in Petta. Rishikanth, the film’s other lead, has shared screen space with Rajinikanth in Coolie, giving the meeting an added layer of history for the team.

What Dorothy is about

Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Dorothy follows Sananth and Rishikanth as Subbu and Karthi, two friends whose worldview is shaped by toxic masculinity, caste prejudice and violence. Their assumptions begin to shift when they meet Dorothy, played by Keerthy Suresh, whose compassion challenges the biases they have grown used to.

The film does not treat those social issues as abstract ideas. It follows how they show up in personal relationships and in the way people read the world around them.

Why this praise matters

Endorsements from peers such as Dhanush, Suriya and Mani Ratnam have already kept Dorothy in the conversation. Rajinikanth’s response, though, is the one that turns a professional milestone into a personal memory for Subbaraj. For an audience that follows stars as closely as the films, that emotional layer is part of the story.

  • Milestone: Dorothy is Karthik Subbaraj’s 10th directorial.
  • Cast: Sananth and Rishikanth lead, with Keerthy Suresh as Dorothy.
  • Music: The film is composer Ilaiyaraaja’s 1,540th as a music director.
  • Producers: Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain.

The filmmaker has spent years celebrating Rajinikanth as a fan. Now he has the Superstar’s own words of appreciation to carry into his next chapter.
