Thiagarajan Kumararaja wraps third film Pocket Novel
Thiagarajan Kumararaja wraps his third feature, Pocket Novel, with Vijay Sethupathi, Raj B Shetty, Malavika Mohanan, Kishore and Ilaiyaraaja's music.

Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Pocket Novel has completed filming, bringing one of Tamil cinema’s most anticipated returns closer to the screen. The director, best known for the cult favourites Aaranya Kaandam and Super Deluxe, is back with his third feature film after a seven-year gap.
A reunion fans have been waiting for
Pocket Novel was first announced in February 2026, pairing Kumararaja with Vijay Sethupathi once again after their acclaimed 2019 film Super Deluxe. That film, with its intersecting storylines and eclectic ensemble, remains a high point in both their filmographies.
The cast also includes Raj B Shetty, Malavika Mohanan and Kishore, bringing together actors with distinct screen identities and experience across Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil cinema. While character details and the plot remain under wraps, the casting is one of the film’s biggest talking points.
The creative team behind Pocket Novel
Ilaiyaraaja is composing the music, reuniting with Kumararaja after their collaboration on the anthology series Modern Love: Chennai. The series offered the filmmaker a chance to explore different shades of contemporary relationships across six stories set in the city.
Andrew Louis, the creator of the crime thriller series Vadhandhi, has written the story and screenplay. The technical crew includes cinematographer Nirav Shah, editor and executive producer Sathyaraj Natarajan, art director V Shanmugaraja and stunt choreographer Dhilip Subbarayan. SD Ezhilmathy co-produces and also serves as costume designer.
Why this return matters
Kumararaja has directed only two feature films before this, but both became reference points for Tamil cinema’s independent streak. His features have resisted conventional narrative structures, mixing dark humour, social observation and unexpected turns. That selective pace makes each new project feel like an event rather than just another release.
The ensemble adds another layer of curiosity. Casting actors with strong identities across film industries signals a story built for character work, not formula. And with Louis bringing a crime-thriller background into the writing, the collaboration could push the film in a different direction while retaining Kumararaja’s offbeat voice.
What we know so far
- Pocket Novel has wrapped filming, but no release date has been announced.
- It marks Kumararaja’s first feature since Super Deluxe in 2019 and his third overall.
- The cast spans Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam cinema.
- Ilaiyaraaja is scoring the film, with Andrew Louis on story and screenplay.
Kumararaja is producing under the Tyler Durden and Kino Fist banner alongside SD Ezhilmathy. With post-production still ahead and the title offering little clue about the story, the reunion, the new writing voice and Ilaiyaraaja’s music remain the strongest reasons for anticipation. The next update should reveal more about what Kumararaja has been quietly building.
