Disha Patani at 10 Years: No Single Bollywood Image

A decade after M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Disha Patani is chasing psychological dramas, thrillers and action roles that put character first.

At 10 years, Disha Patani is rewriting her on-screen identity

Ten years after her first Hindi film, Disha Patani is entering her second decade with a deliberate ask: characters that complicate the image audiences already have of her. In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the actor traced her arc from M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story to Welcome To The Jungle and Awarapan 2, and signalled that her next phase will lean on story rather than stereotype.

From first-day nerves to instincts she trusts

Patani remembers her debut as a crash course in the basics. “Everything was new to me,” she said, recalling how she was learning the rhythm of a set, how to face the camera, how to break down a character and how to absorb direction. The actor describes that younger self as instinctive, but she believes her understanding has since deepened.

That confidence has not dulled her appetite for effort. “I never want to reach a point where I feel like I know everything or that I can do something without putting in the work,” she said. What drives her now is the opposite of mastery: she said the bigger fear would be losing her curiosity.

What a second decade looks like

That curiosity is becoming a project filter. Patani says she is drawn to characters with contradictions and depth, the kind of roles where physicality and glamour take a back seat to the story. Her wishlist includes:

  • Psychological dramas built on internal conflict and layered stakes.
  • Character-driven thrillers where the person matters more than the twist.
  • Action films with real roles, not just polished set-pieces.

She is also looking beyond familiar territory. Patani wants to collaborate with filmmakers from different backgrounds and work across languages and genres, because varied roles help an actor keep growing. “I don’t want to be defined by one particular kind of role or image,” she said.

Why this shift matters now

Ten years is usually a consolidation point in Bollywood: once a star finds the look or genre that works, the safest move is often to repeat it. Patani is choosing a different path. This is less a rejection of the parts that built her visibility and more a renegotiation. Glamour and dance-floor ease made her familiar; character-led thrillers and psychological material can make that familiarity last.

The crossover step is already visible. Patani is set for her Hollywood debut in the supernatural action-thriller The Portal of Force, a concrete move beyond Hindi cinema. For fans, the promise is simple: if she keeps following the unrehearsed parts, the next ten years may look nothing like the last.
