Anil Kapoor Mourns Nana Patekar’s Death After Cardiac Arrest

Anil Kapoor posted an emotional farewell for Nana Patekar, his Welcome co-star, after the actor died of a cardiac arrest in Goa on Thursday.

Anil Kapoor's emotional farewell to Nana Patekar

Nana Patekar, the actor Anil Kapoor affectionately called “nanya” and “Duniya ka sabse bada kalakaar” — the world’s biggest artiste — died on Thursday morning after a severe cardiac arrest in Goa. He was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors tried to revive him for around 45 minutes, but he could not be saved. Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department at Manipal Hospital, confirmed the news.

Anil Kapoor’s emotional farewell

On Thursday evening, Anil Kapoor took to Instagram with a picture of the two of them. His note captured the shock of losing another close friend after Satish Kaushik.

“Mera dost mujhe chhodkar chala gaya… pehle Satish aur ab mera Nanya,” he wrote.

He added that Nana had left suddenly and far too soon, calling him the world’s biggest artiste. Then he listed the places he would miss him: in life, on set, on the phone and on the big screen.

That list is why this tribute is resonating. Anil and Nana were not occasional co-stars; they were a pairing fans returned to again and again.

From Parinda to Welcome

The two first worked together in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 1989 film Parinda, which earned Nana his first National Award. Years later, they became Uday Shetty and Majnu Bhai in Anees Bazmee’s 2007 hit Welcome, and returned for Welcome Back.

Their work together:

  • Parinda (1989): the serious drama that started the friendship
  • Welcome (2007): Uday and Majnu become comedy favourites
  • Welcome Back: the duo returns for another round

The comic timing in Welcome made the film endlessly quotable, and the chemistry between the two men was a large reason why.

A farewell with state honours

Nana Patekar’s last rites were performed late on Thursday night at Nanachi Wadi, his farmhouse in Donje village near Khadakwasla, Pune, with full state honours. Senior political leaders and thousands of fans were present.

Since the news broke, tributes have poured in from actors, the film fraternity, politicians and fans. For many, the loss is personal: a familiar face from the films they grew up watching is gone.

How to remember him

For fans who want to mark the loss, the films are the natural place to start. Parinda shows the dramatic range that earned Nana his first National Award, and Welcome shows the comic timing that made Uday and Majnu a household pairing. Together they explain why Anil Kapoor’s farewell is not just about a co-star, but about a friend.
