Kate McKinnon has been cast in Warner Bros.’ upcoming Barbie film. Greta Gerwig will direct the film, which stars Margot Robbie as the eponymous doll and Ryan Reynolds as Ken, and she co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach, her partner and fellow filmmaker.
The film, which was first announced in 2009, has had a long road ahead of it. Along the process, there were several twists and turns, with Oscar-winner Diablo Cody authoring the book and celebrities Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway being considered for the titular role. After the dust had cleared, Warner cast Robbie as Barbie, recruited Gerwig and Baumbach, and things started to take shape. Irrespective of what the future will hold for Barbie, the movie’s ensemble looks to have been coming together nicely thus far.
Kate McKinnon, a regular on Saturday Night Live, is the most recent addition to the ensemble, as per Deadline. It’s unknown what role the 38-year-old actress will play in the film, but fans are sure to be excited that she’ll be starring with Robbie and Ryan in what might be a massive hit. Apart from the performers, Gerwig and Baumbach are two of the key reasons for Barbie’s potential to exceed many people’s expectations. Baumbach, for example, has spent nearly three decades writing and directing his own films, receiving three Academy Award nominations.
McKinnon’s addition will almost definitely give whatever storey Gerwig and Baumbach have crafted a unique spin. McKinnon, with her witty sense of humour and odd, yet endearing demeanour, would be a good fit for a villain role in the film, though this has yet to be verified.
