After quitting professional Wushu there at age of 19, he went on to become a well-known actor in China, debuting inside the movie Shaolin Temple (1982). He moved on to feature in a number of critically acclaimed martial arts epic movies, including Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2002), Fist of Legend (1994), and the very first three movies inside the Once Upon a Time in China franchise, wherein he played folk hero Wong Fei-hung.

Li’s first non-Chinese movie appearance would be as a villain in Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), and his first main part inside a Hollywood movie was just as Han Sing in Romeo Must Die (2001). (2000). He went on now to feature in a number of foreign action pictures, such as the Luc Besson-produced Kiss of the Dragon and Unleashed in French cinema (2005). He appeared with Jason Statham in The One (2001) as well as War, Jackie Chan in The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), Sylvester Stallone throughout all three Expendables movies, and since the title character villain in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

He had his international debut film in Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998, which also was his first time playing a villain inside a movie.

Because he told his wife that he would not do any films during her pregnancy, Li declined Chow Yun-role fat’s in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). He also declined the part of Seraph in The Matrix trilogy, believing that the character did not require his abilities and also that the movies were legendary and breathtaking enough without his name upon that cast list. When The Green Hornet had been in development in 2000, Li was cast as Kato inside the movie. It was relocated to a new studio in 2001. Jay Chou was cast in the role of Kato when the film was remade and released in 2011.

In 2001, he participated in two additional movies, which first was The One, in which he starred with Jason Statham. Because he told his wife that he would not make any movies throughout her pregnancy, Li declined Chow Yun-role fat’s in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). He also declined the part of Seraph in The Matrix trilogy, believing that the character did not require his abilities and that the movies were legendary and breathtaking enough as it is without his name upon that cast list. Everything Li ever has wanted to tell the world could be found in three of his movies, as per Li: the message of Hero would be that one person’s suffering could never be as significant as just a nation’s suffering; Unleashed shows that corruption is really not a solution; as well as Fearless demonstrates that what a person’s greatest enemy is himself. The best weapon, in Li’s opinion, is a smile, as well as the highest strength, is love.

He feels that the core of martial arts is inner harmony, not force or speed and that today’s Wushu championships lay a higher focus on form than on the essence of being a martial artist, which he deems a sad development. He says Wushu has lost its personality and that competitors now move like robots, despite the fact that he believes Wushu should also not be viewed as a competition in which the quickest athlete wins.
